LEVEL 2 AWARD IN CHAINSAW MAINTENANCE AND CROSS CUTTING

​OVERVIEW
This course is for anyone who is required to operate chainsaws for cross cutting only, and provide the knowledge and skills required for learners to be assessed for the regulated qualification: NPTC 201 / 202 Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting.

Formerly known as CS30 this qualification is also for those who work in the forest and/or arboricultural industries or those who need to be able to progress to fell and process material over 200mm in diameter.

This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to operate a chainsaw at a basic level. The course is very physical and candidates must be fit and able to carry out the tasks required of the course safely.

The first day of this Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting Course takes place in our training rooms and workshops and takes the candidate through risk assessments, health and safety legislation, personal protective equipment and chainsaw maintenance (including chain identification and sharpening). The second day is spent in a local forest and covers site safety, pre-start checks, start procedures, correct stance and grip, cross-cutting, removing a trapped saw from the log and moving and stacking produce.

Following training, the candidate is then assessed by an independently appointed NPTC Assessor and successful candidates will receive an NPTC Certificate of Competence & NPTC Skills Card.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
To enable course members to:
  • Learn and understand relevant Health & Safety Legislation and Industry Good Practice
  • Daily & routine maintenance on a chainsaw and cutting system
  • Be able to work safely including operator safety and risk assessments
  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Emergency procedures on a work site
  • Starting & checking the chainsaw
  • Be able to cross cut timber using a chainsaw
  • Stacking cross-cut timber

ASSESSMENT
This course is assessed by NPTC. The NPTC Assessment is divided into 2 compulsory units:
Unit 201 (30.1) – Maintenance of the Chainsaw
Unit 202 (30.2) – On-Site Preparation and Basic Crosscutting

The minimum age limit for Candidates taking Certificates of Competence is 16 years. There is no upper age limit. ​

DURATION
Two days training and one day's assessment, three days in total.

Candidates must provide their own PPE.
​Felling equipment and saws are available for use by candidates who have not yet purchased their own equipment. Please contact EMTS for hire cost.
Equipment requirements will be sent to the candidate once booking has been confirmed.
