​OVERVIEW

This qualification is a COMBINED full time course comprising of: NPTC 201 / 202 Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting and NPTC 203  (CS31)  Level 2 award in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm.

This combined course allows successful candidates to fell trees commercially up to 380mm diameter. The first day is workshop based, covering legislation, risk assessments, basic chainsaw maintenance, chain ID, sharpening and organising site safety.

The next four days take place in the woods and covers starting the saw safely, basic felling cuts, felling trees that lean back slightly, felling trees that lean forward significantly and manual take-down of hung up trees. For the purpose of this course, the length of the chainsaw bar is usually 15″ (380mm) and the tree will therefore not exceed bar length.

Chainsaw courses are very physical and candidates must be fit and able to carry out the tasks required of the course. 

Following training, the candidate is then assessed by an independently appointed NPTC Assessor and successful candidates will receive an NPTC Certificate of Competence & NPTC Skills Card.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
To enable course members to:
  • Understand site safety, risk assessments and emergency procedures on a work site
  • Be able to carry out operational chainsaw checks
  • Be able to carry out maintenance of the chainsaw and cutting system
  • Select and prepare equipment required for chainsaw use and safe and effective felling
  • Site preparation and assessing individual trees for hazards
  • Fell trees up to 380mm safely and accurately using an appropriate method
  • Processing felled trees
  • Cross-cut stems accurately and safely to a given length and diameter specification
  • Stack timber using appropriate manual handling techniques
  • Take down small hung-up trees safely using appropriate hand tools
  • Understanding tension and compression in felled timber
  • Know relevant Health & Safety Legislation and Industry Good Practice

ASSESSMENT
EMTS arrange all assessments for our candidates and is priced as part of the course. NPTC 201 / 202 / 203  (CS30 and CS31)  Level 2 award in Ground Based Chainsaw Operative has a one day assessment  by a NPTC assessor.

The minimum age limit for Candidates taking Certificates of Competence is 16 years. There is no upper age limit. ​

DURATION
Five days training and one day's assessment, six days in total.

​Felling equipment and saws are available for use by candidates who have not yet purchased their own equipment. Please contact EMTS for hire cost.
