OVERVIEW
Formerly known as COMBINED CS38 & CS39, this qualification involves the use of a chainsaw and is designed for arborists, tree surgeons, people who have jobs that require tree climbing or people wishing to enter the forestry industry who are holders of  NPTC 201, 202 & 203 (CS30 & CS31).

​This course covers the accessing of trees through climbing (both ladders and using climbing equipment) and by Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) to carry out rescues in a variety of contexts (pruning operation, cutting, dismantle or rigging). The aerial rescues include recovery of both conscious and unconscious casualties. 
​
This qualification ranges from the removal of single limb/parts of tree canopy to the complete removal of trees without the use of rigging equipment. It is also covers the removal of tree sections from the crown using free-fall or hand thrown techniques. You will be taught to carry out a tree hazard evaluation and perform a ‘working at height’ assessments. You will learn to carry out cutting operations using appropriate access techniques and will gain access and carry out cutting operations in line with the above assessment from a rope and harness.

Climbing courses are very physical and candidates must be fit and able to carry out the tasks required of the course, including the carrying and movement of equipment in a woodland / forest environment. You must not suffer from vertigo or similar conditions and you must also be free from medication that could affect your safety.

Following training, the candidate is then assessed by an independently appointed NPTC Assessor and successful candidates will receive an NPTC Certificate of Competence & NPTC Skills Card.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
To enable course members to:
  • Understand the relevant HSE legislation, safety guidelines, work plans, and risk assessments
  • Learn safe working practices, considerations, inspections, and tree access techniques
  • Understand and fulfil the duties and responsibilities of a competent grounds and aerial personnel
  • Equipment inspection, storage and waste disposal.
  • Legal, environmental factors and requirements of LOLER legislation
  • Rope, knots, Cord and Karabiners – types and use
  • Aerial rescue techniques and key elements of a rescue
  • plan
  • Tree identification
  • Understand the requirements of the Working at Heights Regulations
  • Set up climbing system, safely climb tree & establish anchor points
  • Branch walking techniques, moving around the crown & descending to the ground
  • Basic First Aid Principles (BRAB) & dealing with unconscious people or spinal injuries
  • Remove limbs using handheld and free fall techniques
  • Check and prepare the chainsaw for intended operations

ASSESSMENT
EMTS arrange all assessments for our candidates and is priced as part of the combined course.

The minimum age limit for Candidates taking Certificates of Competence is 16 years. There is no upper age limit. 

DURATION
Two days training and one day's assessment, three days in total.

We do not hide costs, our price shown is the total amount due, this includes full training and assessment charges. What you see is what you pay.

DISCOUNTS
10% discount on net training cost is available if a client provides all four trainees for the course.

PRE-REQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS
​The pre-requisites for this course are:
NPTC 201 Level 2 Carry out maintenance of chainsaw and cutting system and NPTC 202 Level 2 Cross-cut timber using a chainsaw (CS30)
NPTC 203 Level 2 (CS31) Fell and process trees up to 380mm

EQUIPMENT
Candidates must provide their own PPE.
Appropriate footwear is required (steel toe cap boots are recommended)
Climbing and felling equipment is available for use by candidates who have not yet purchased their own equipment. Please contact EMTS for hire cost.
Equipment requirements will be sent to the candidate once booking has been confirmed.
